Link is saying goodbye to Aryll since he needs to find new land for Hyrule. Aryll is tightly hugging Link which is a gesture of great attachment. Aryll is crying since she will need to be separated from Link. A facial expression is powerful and conveys her emotion. This is shown through multiple tears running down her face. The audience can imagine the sounds of sobs coming from her frown. Her eyes being tightly shut showcasing that her feelings are being expressed. Her posture shows she had fallen on to Link as her legs are leaning on Link's tunic. This shows that her feelings are all being poured out onto Link. Link is returning the hug while kneeling. The purpose is to be in a more comfortable position and fully accept Aryll hug. Link is crying on the inside evidence by his eyebrow making a curve which conveys sadness. He is smiling to put on a brave face and to give himself hope that he will see her again.
The background is from our outset Island just outside Link's grandma's house. This is evident due to the floor being made out of the same wood and the shape of the house. Behind Link is the vast ocean which is where he will be departing from his sister.
The artwork is effective in catching the reaction of Aryll knowing that Link will be leaving alongside Link's response from Aryll sorrowful outburst.
